for information about tournee du chat noir. i have the print and love it but am curious as to what it means, etc. all i can come
up with is return of the black cat...someone said it was a play...any information you have would make my day. thanks. Thanks for writing, Amy, and for your interest in Steinlen, who is my favorite illustrator! The "Tournee du Chat Noir" poster says, roughly: "Coming Soon: Chat Noir Tour With Rodolphe Salis." The "Chat Noir" originally was a cabaret in Montmartre (a friend of mine from France advises the cafe still stands and Steinlen's artwork survives!) Thereafter, it became a touring show put on by Rodolphe Salis, who was a friend of Steinlen's. By the time the poster was commissioned, the Chat Noir had been in existence for fifteen years and was well past its prime. Begininng in 1892, Salis took the show on the road to the larger cities of the French provinces, and also to Switzerland, Belgium, Algeria, and Tunisia. The tours were only moderately successful. Returning to Montmartre in 1895, he closed the cabaret but reopened it in October of 1896. He was formulating a tour to Russia the following year, but died before it could commence.
